После окончания факультета психологии университета Тулса в штате Оклахома Хантер Хоффман занимался изучением памяти, архаического мышления, а также биоэлектромагнитизма. Изучая память с Марсием Джонсом в Принстонском университете, Хоффман пытался понять, как люди отделяют реальные воспоминания от вымышленных. Эти исследования в дальнейшем помогли Хоффману поступить в магистратуру университета штата Вашингтон в Сиэтле, где он работал под руководством легендарного эксперта Элизабет Лофтус, знаменитой своими исследованиями о пластичности человеческой памяти, связанной с криминальными событиями, несчастными случаями, воспоминаниями детства и об искажении памяти, которое происходит в результате получения новой информации о событиях, воспоминания о которых уже сформированы. Хоффман защитил кандидатскую диссертацию по когнитивной психологии в 1992 году в университете штата Вашингтон, после чего продолжил исследовательскую работу в университете МакМастер в Канаде.
В 1993 году Хоффман вернулся в Сиэтл, где и начал исследования технологии виртуальной реальности в лаборатории интерактивных технологий университет штата Вашингтон, одного из крупнейших научно-исследовательских центров виртуальной реальности в мире.
